Now, Another Daily, TV Channel By A Politician!

It has become a trend for politicians to start media ventures, be it newspapers or television channels.

The latest to join the media bandwagon is the Congress legislator from Medak district Toorpu Jayaprakash Reddy who is a staunch critic of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) President K Chandrasekhar Rao.

Expectedly, his proposed Telugu newspaper and a TV channel will be competitors to the TRS leader’s media ventures- T-News channel and “Namaste Telangana” daily.

Jayaprakash, who represents Sangareddy constituency, asserted that his media organizations would reflect the genuine voice of the Telangana people. The daily and the channel are tentatively titled “Jai Telangana Jai”.

Jayaprakash made a scathing attack on KCR for using the media organizations as weapons to extort money.

“KCR and his family members have been exploiting the Telangana sentiment to further own self interests and made huge money. He has now entered into the media field with the same intention,” the Congress legislator said.

The YSR Congress Party President Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy owns “Sakshi” daily and TV channel while the Telugu Desam Party Chief N Chandrababu Naidu’s son Nara Lokesh runs “Studio-N” channel.

TV9 To Be Blacked Out In Telangana

The leading Telugu news channel TV9 has earned the wrath of the Telangana protagonists because of its alleged biased coverage of events pertaining to the statehood movement.

The stand-off has now reached a flashpoint with the Telangana Cable Operators’ Joint Action Committee deciding to boycott the channel across the region from Monday.

As a result, the channel will be blacked out in the region till it mends its ways. The JAC has issued notices to this effect to the Telangana MSOs (Multiple System Operators).

The JAC has accused the TV9 management of adopting a deliberate anti-Telangana stand and twisting the developments to suit its position.

The latest incident that triggered the confrontation was the suicide of Yadi Reddy, a youth from Moinabad in Ranga Reddy district, in the heart of Delhi.

The Cable Operators’ JAC has alleged that TV9 had deliberately blacked out the coverage. The suicide incident was completely ignored by the channel. It was not mentioned even as a scroll.

However, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi legislator T Harish Rao beating up an official of the Andhra Pradesh Bhavan was played up by the channel. It repeatedly showed the footage.

Sony set to buy ETV's channels

Biggest media deal for $500-600 million to give Sony a bigger share of regional pie.

In what will be the largest media deal in India, Multi-Screen Media (MSM), which runs Sony Television in India, is set to buy Ramoji Rao-owned Eenadu TV’s (ETV’s) bouquet of 11 regional channels.

According to four independent sources, the talks are at an advanced stage and an announcement is expected shortly.

The deal size is expected to be close to $500-600 million (Rs 2,250-2,400 crore), eclipsing transactions such as Disney’s strategic investments in UTV, Turner’s buyout of NDTV Imagine from New Delhi Television and Viacom teaming up with Network18, which runs India’s version of CNBC.

The deal will give Sony a nationwide regional platform to take on rivals STAR and Zee.

Apart from having a pan-India presence, ETV’s infotainment channels also reach out to Indian diaspora in the US, providing digital entertainment via ETV Telugu, ETV Bangla and ETV Gujarati entertainment channels.

ETV’s regional channels have had an interesting model of clubbing news and entertainment.

The MSM spokesperson told Business Standard the “company will not comment on market speculation”. Eenadu Group’s Managing Director and Ramoji’s son, Kiron Rao, did not respond to email queries. The group’s media officer refused to comment.

E&Y is believed to be advising Eenadu.

Sources in the know say the deal will be in tranches and will allow investors such as Nimesh Kampani of JM Financial to exit. In 2008, Kampani, one of India’s savviest deal makers, came on board of Ushodaya Enterprises, the publisher of the flagship, Eenadu, the largest-selling Telugu newspaper. Ushodaya also doubles up as the holding company of Ramoji Rao’s media empire spanning newspapers and television.

Kampani’s structured transaction — which included debt and equity — valued at Rs 2,600 crore for close to 40 per cent stake had helped Ushodaya wriggle out of another deal the Rao family was planning with private equity player Blackstone Group to sell a 26 per cent stake for $275 million (Rs 1,080 crore).

Ushodaya has three divisions, Eenadu Publications, ETV Network and pickles and food company Priya Foods. The group has diversified rapidly into film and TV production and distribution, financial services, garment manufacturing and hospitality. It also owns a 1,600-acre Ramoji Film City.

According to analysts, for the nine months ended December 2010, Ushodaya reported a profit after tax of Rs 13.2 crore on an income of Rs 1,062 crore. TV contributed 37 per cent revenue. The publication division contributed the highest (40 per cent).

With Sony buying the TV business, Ushodaya will get money, which will help the Eenadu promoters redeem preference shares and debentures, giving Kampani an exit option.

Blackstone and Kampani were embroiled in a political jam, which even led to Kampani being hounded out of the country after lookout notices were issued against him at major international airports.

Eenadu is a fierce competitor of Sakshi, the newspaper of former chief minister Y S R Reddy’s son, Jagan Reddy. But a deal with Sony would have violated the 26 per cent foreign direct investment cap on news operations. Which is why, sources said, Eenadu had to phase out its hourly news capsules.

ETV also runs a 24-hour Telugu news channel, ETV2, which will not be sold to Sony.

Sources said for news TV, talks with TV 18 might be revived. TV 18, said a source, was approached first for the entire TV business. The talks did not fructify.

MSM runs six channels, Sony TV, SAB TV, Set Max, Sony Pix, AXN and Animax, and has a 15 per cent market share in the Hindi general entertainment space. From a premier position, it has slipped, hamstrung by an ongoing dispute with minority shareholders, inconsistent programming and a not-so-successful relaunch with Yash Raj Television.

Despite having some of the biggest properties — IPL, Kaun Banega Crorepati and Indian Idol — Sony has been edged out of the top three slots, especially by late entrant Viacom 18, which launched the hugely popular Colors in 2008.

Sony is no stranger to doing deals to scale up. It bought Sri Adhikari Brothers (SAB) TV to have a second-line general entertainment channel to compete with STAR One. Hindi comedy and light entertainment channel SAB TV has been a huge success.

But Sony’s regional play has been small. It branched out in the Bangla general entertainment space, but with limited success. Eenadu, therefore, gives it the right platform to be a formidable national and regional broadcaster.

According to a Ficci-KPMG report, regional general entertainment accounts for over 25.06 per cent of the Rs 8,000 crore-plus TV advertising pie with a viewership share of 27.3 per cent.

Sony’s competitors STAR India and Zee Entertainment have a strong presence in the regional general entertainment space. STAR has STAR Vijay, STAR Pariah, STAR Balsa and Asianet. Zee, on its part, has eight regional channels.

Clarification: Raj TV’s Raj News continues; T News operates as separate entity

n context to an exchange4media article published on July 4, 2011, headlined ‘Raj News renamed as T News; plans to launch Telugu GEC soon’, Raj TV has clarified that following the termination of agreement between Telangana Broadcasting and Raj TV, the former has set up a new entity T News.
 
Raj TV’s Raj News continues to be a Telugu news channel. A Raj TV official explained, “It is no longer a Telangana news channel. It is now managed by Raj TV itself.”

T News officials also clarified that under the agreement with Raj TV, Telangana Broadcasting was managing Raj News for a period of one year. In April 2011, Telangana was issued its own licence, and with that it started T News.

Hollywood action heroes belt out Telugu on outdoors in Andhra Pradesh

The new Telugu channel, UTV Action Telugu, has action-packed scenes and local language dialogues in its promos in electronic stores, across cities in the state.

 

Picture Will Smith in his 'Men In Black' avatar or Spiderman, delivering hard-hitting dialogues in Telugu -- well, for the Telugu-speaking Hollywood fans, this is now a reality with the recently launched UTV Action Telugu channel.

UTV, which had launched the 'Action' Hindi channel that showcases dubbed Hollywood movies last year, launched the same in Telugu on June 26. To promote the launch, the channel has tied up with electronic retail stores in Hyderabad to air promos of the channel across their displayed TV screens.

Eight electronic stores including NEXT at A S Rao Nagar, Nallakunta, Malkapet, Croma at Jubilee Hills, Punjagutta, E-Zone at Hyderabad Central, Punjagutta, and City Center at Banjara Hills, as well as HomeTown in Punjagutta are running the UTV Action Telugu promos. The promos will play on the TV screens for one month.

The channel has also plastered key cities in Andhra Pradesh with an outdoor campaign that comprises about 150 hoardings, bus backs and bus shelters at prominent locations. The campaign is designed around the theme, 'Action invades Andhra'. The new channel is being promoted through a high intensity marketing plan to ensure optimum visibility across platforms including print, television, outdoor and an extensive on-ground activation. 

The entire communication is in Telugu. However, interestingly, it is not inspired by any specific movie, but rather, is inspired by the language used in Telugu action movies. This outdoor campaign will be on for a month. The creatives have been done by the Mumbai-based agency Xtrathin, while the media has been handled by OAP.

Giving insights on the electronics retail store promotion idea, Kunal Mukherjee, marketing head, UTV Action Telugu, says, "Consumers go to the electronics stores to experience the TV viewing of new models and missing out on the channel promos across all was a very small possibility. Apart from the regular traditional advertising through outdoor, print media and TV, we needed to reach out to our audiences in places which will definitely grab their attention."


On the UTV Action journey and the launch of the new Telugu channel, he says, "UTV Action was born from the insight that only action content permeates across languages. Traditionally, male audiences accumulated on news and cricket channels. With UTV Action, we broke this trend and right from the launch, gave men a destination on television to call their own. After the success of UTV Action Hindi, it was evident that action as a genre cuts across all barriers and appeals to all kinds of audiences."

He further adds that Telugu is the second-most preferred language of release for Hollywood action films in India, with Andhra yielding the highest returns for Hollywood films when dubbed in the local language.

For instance, blockbusters such as Avatar and 2012 grossed more than Rs 30 crore in Telugu alone. Through UTV Action Telugu, the channel intends to become the ultimate action destination in that region.

UTV Action Telugu is also associating with single screen theatres in more than 25 cities and multiplexes across key markets such as Hyderabad, Vizag and Vijaywada, as these are heavy movie-viewing markets.

The channel also plans to launch in other languages, but these are still in the pipeline.

Raj News renamed as T News; plans to launch Telugu GEC soon

Launched last year, Telugu news channel Raj News, from the stable of Telangana Broadcasting Pvt Ltd, has changed its name to T News with effect from April 2011. Meanwhile, the channel has beefed up its content line-up and had made significant changes in the overall look and feel of the channel.

Now, Telangana Broadcasting is gearing up to launch a new Telugu general entertainment channel for the Telangana region.

Speaking to exchange4media, Upendra N, GM, Advertising & Marketing, T News, said, “Since we have got very good response from the market for T News, we are planning to launch T Entertainment very soon.”

On the thought process behind changing the name of Raj News, Upendra explained, “As a channel name, T News is easier to remember. Meanwhile, in order to continue the forward momentum of our fast growth, we are also bringing in new technology and equipment to enhance the broadcast quality, coverage, content and programmes.”

Recently, the channel had undergone a makeover with changes design, layout and colour format. This apart, the channel is busy strengthening its content line-up with the introduction of new programmes. The channel has appointed new staff in its various departments, including reporters and anchors.

Upendra further said that as the channel was not on the DTH platform at present, they were in talks with various DTH players to expand the reach of the channel. It may be recalled that the group had come up with a Telugu newspaper recently named Namasthe Telangana from the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh.

The Filmfare Awards ceremony was held yesterday at Novotel, Hyderabad in spectacular way filling in excitement among every one.

The show picked up at 7:30 PM and went on till 2 PM amidst full crowd those didn’t get away from their seats. Although some felt uncomfortable for the show running late, the glow, glitter and the presence of stars of all four South Indian languages couldn’t make them leave the place.

DD to telecast Wimbledon finals

NEW DELHI: The men and women's finals of the Wimbledon Tournament in London will be telecast live by Doordarshan on its national channel, DD One.

The women's singles finals is being telecast today from 6.30 pm, and the men’s singles final will be telecast live the next day 3 July from 6.30 pm till conclusion. The telecasts will be preceded by a pre-match discussion.

DD will also telecast live the annual Car Festival of Lord Jagannath at 9 am on 3 July until conclusion.

మంత్రి దానం నాగేందర్ తమ సమావేశాలకు గత రెండేళ్లలో ఎప్పుడూ రాలేదని, ఇద్దరో ముగ్గురో మంత్రులు తమ సమావేశాలకు రావడం లేదని, ఆ విషయం అందరికీ తెలుసునని, వారిని ప్రజలు చూసుకుంటారని, కొత్తగా ఆ మంత్రులు రావడం లేదని ఎందుకు అడుగుతారని ఆయన అన్నారు. తామంతా కలిసికట్టుగా ఉన్నామని ఆయన చెప్పారు. శుక్రవారం సమావేశంలో 21 మంది సభ్యులు రాజీనామాకు ఆమోదించారని ఆయన చెప్పారు. మీడియా పనిగట్టుకుని తమపై దుష్ప్రచారం చేస్తోందని కాంగ్రెసు పార్లమెంటు సభ్యుడు మందా జగన్నాథం కూడా అన్నారు. తాము 11 మంది పార్లమెంటు సభ్యులం పార్లమెంటు సమావేశాలను స్తంభింపజేశామని, ఇప్పుడు కూడా తాము కలిసే ఉంటామని ఆయన చెప్పారు.

UTV Action Telugu plans foreign trip for media agencies

Disney Junior to debut on Disney Channel on July 4

 Disney Junior, a new multi-language and multiplatform entertainment destination for kids aged 2-7, reflecting the emotional connection generations of consumers have with Disney storytelling and characters, will debut at 11:00 a.m. on MONDAY, July 4, 2011 on Disney Channel --- the #1 entertainment destination for kids. The brand new programming band will be telecast in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Siddarth: 'TV Media Cannot Pluck My Hair'

It has often been said by the film nagar folks that actor Siddarth is a talented individual but it is his attitude and headstrong nature which is not getting him favourable response. Now, his recent set of statements in Twitter on the Telugu news channels has triggered another controversy. However, the actor doesn’t seem too fazed about it.

Apparently, the news channels association has demanded an action on Siddarth for his statements. Knowing this, Sidz is reportedly saying this in front of his friends “TV Media or cine circuit cannot pluck my hair. Earlier, they jumped against Prakash Raj, what happened? I don’t want to take my tweet back. Ultimately, talent matters in the cinema industry.”
