Telugu TV channels protest curbs

HYDERABAD: The newly-formed Telugu News Broadcasters Association (TNBA) today protested against the “unilateral and unwarranted'' restrictions imposed on the media which is covering the ongoing agitations for separate Telangana in Hyderabad, particularly in the Osmania University campus. The TNBA termed the actions of the police as undemocratic which are against the freedom of press and information.

In a two-page letter addressed to the Hyderabad police commissioner, the TNBA, comprising heads of various Telugu news channels, said that they had not been consulted before imposition of the restrictions nor there was any preparatory meeting prior to issuance of the guidelines.

Despite the promise to allow free flow of information there were serious lapses on government's part such as failure to appoint an official spokesperson to update the media on the ongoing events after Justice Srikrishna Committee submitted its report.

The TNBA appealed to Hyderabad police commissioner AK Khan to allow the media to report the protests and agitations being organised in Hyderabad, particularly Osmania University campus.
