Show of good teamwork

A scene from Sri Rama Pattabhishekam
Strong performances accompanied by efficient backstage support.

Epic drama, Sree Rama Pattabhishekam, scripted with dialogues mostly in poetic idiom in chaste Telugu by Palleti Lakshmi Kulasekhar of Kadapa, was staged at Kalabharathi, Visakhapatnam, last Friday. Directed by Akluri Venkatayya, it was soulfully presented by the members of the Savera Arts Association of Kadapa.

Visakha Music and Dance Academy, in association with A.P. State Film Television and Theatre Development Corporation Limited, Hyderabad, organised the staging of the play. Among other episodes which mark the Vanavasa event, the soul stirring show of high esteem coupled with a similar warmth of love, surrender and devoted regard to Sree Rama as an incarnate of the Supreme by Sabari. The deer episode, abduction of Sita by Ravana in disguise, the encounter with Anjaniputra followed by Sugreeva Maitri, a few circumstances that led to Rama-Ravana yuddham and the ending with a brief Rama Pattabhishekam stood out. The selection and the musical exploration of the varied attributes of about two dozens of ragas in musically intoning the poetic dialogues with empathy by Y. Gangadhar as Anjaneya, P. Venkateswarlu as Rama, D. Nagamani as Lakshmana, M. Subbarayudu as Jambavantha, S. Vimala Devi as Sabari in particular contributed splendour personifying the characters they donned.

The others — R. Saradavani as Sitha, Pedda Reddayya as Bharatha, S. Srinivasulu as Satrughna, M.V. Ramana Rao as Sugreeva, S. Naganna as Ravana, Y.K.V. Krishna Reddy as Vibheeshana, P. Chandrasekhar as Meghanadha, G. Penchalayya as Agnideva, and M. Sugunakar as Vasishta, appeared not wanting individually and collectively as well. Some poems musically rendered in the background by Y. Krishna Murty who also provided accompaniment on harmonium, set the music sensibly. Accompaniment on tabla by M. Madhu, D.V. Subbayya on clarinet and costumes by S.R. Brahmam, stage décor and lighting were done by Surabhi Jaisankar and S.A. Jaisankar, and makeup by B. Brahmam proved to be assets.
