The sources of revenue for the producers are not just from the distributors but also from the satellite rights and DVD rights for their movies. However, a new format has developed in the recent past wherein one source is buying both the satellite and the DVD rights.
These are the TV Channels and there is a business logic in that. While they are buying satellite rights, along with that they are also buying DVD rights as a package and it comes at a lesser cost. Usually, it is only after the film is screened in the TV channel that the DVD should be released.
Now, reliable sources are saying that if cinema is a hit then the DVD is being released immediately. But if it is a flop then the TV channels are saying they will release the DVD version only after three times screening happens in the channel. Logically speaking, when should that happen. Be it a big or small film, the TV folks feel it is a waste of expenditure by releasing a DVD. That way they are playing with the DVD rights.
