RGV, the drama king

Ram Gopal Varma derives great pleasure in criticising Karan Johar’s movie-making abilities, but when nasty comments are directed towards him, the spoilsport director goes running to the cops to lodge a complaint! A Telugu news channel decided to take an hour out of its schedule to criticise Varma on a show titled Ramu Damal Varma, and the director went ballistic. He took major offence to the fact that two critics spent quality time on TV ripping his movies, including the latest dud KSD Appalraju.

An upset RGV appeared on a TV show to defend his movies and then marched straight to the police station to lodge a complaint. He followed it with a press conference. He made all the right noises about being defamed, but stopped short of lodging a written complaint. So why all this drama? Varma claimed that while he doesn’t mind criticism, he takes offence when things get personal and his viewers gets dragged in! He felt the TV channel insulted his beloved audience and said he doesn’t treat them well.

Maybe RGV should check whether he has any audience left! When contacted, many from the film fraternity felt it didn’t deserve a comment, while director Nandini Reddy of Ala Mogulanidi feels RGV is overreacting. “Everyone has the right to criticise a film and every filmmaker knows that. People should stop sensationalising things as we have better things to pay attention to.” Ouch.

Well, the TV channel will be glad to know that the cops will not question them as commissioner A.K. Khan says, “When I asked him to give a written complaint he said he will get back to me. Only after he gives us one, will we look into the matter.” Looks like this was just Varma’s way of milking some free publicity.
